S&M Cafe

In Kayama, Odawara, Japan, where my inlaws live, you can find a coffee shop with a large outdoor sign that reads, "Coffee, Cakes, and Pain." Ouch!

"Pain" is the French word for bread.

Yes, jr. and the Japanese word is パン or pan. Most Japanese loan words like this come from English, so no doubt the owners of the shop thought it fit in nicely with coffee and cakes. Unfortunately, the word entered Japanese from Portuguese.
