What's up with white in Japanese?

Starting a few days ago hundreds of people have been searching the net for the Japanese word for white and finding their way to a few postings I made back in 2007. I'm very curious about what has spawned this peak in interest, so if anybody knows, please fill me in. If you're still looking, the noun is 白 (shiro), and the adjective is 白い (shiroi).

On January 8th, 2009, there was a quiz game submitted on newgrounds.com where one of the questions was what the japanese word for white was. This may be the reason.

Personally, and the timing has nothing do do with your spike. But we are about to have a Japanese spitz puppy join the family. I had wanted a girl I was going to name her Yuki for snow. But we can only get a boy so I was looking for a more masculine name and was looking for ideas.
